What is Phoenix?
Phoenix is a Photographic Online
Information System, designed for the unique needs of Project
SAVE Photograph Archives. Phoenix has been developed within the
scope of Digital Access Program at Project SAVE Archives.
Why did you develop Phoenix?
The aim of our endeavor is to showcase
the breadth of the information stored in the thousands of photo
collections at Project SAVE Archives. These collections were donated
to us by private donors to help us in our Mission of preserving and
promoting the Armenian culture and history through the photograph.
Why are your needs unique?
Over the course of 30 years, Project
SAVE Archives meticulously documented each and every photograph we
collected. This method is called item-level documentation. In our
case "item-level" means that for each photograph we have collected
the names of the people, places, photo contents and much more. All
this data was filled into our catalog sheets thus creating a paper
"database" of the archives. Our situation was unique in that none of
the available photographic information systems addressed our need to
easily enter and retrieve this item-level information.
What challenges do you face?
Most of our challenges are similar to
those found in non-profit organizations around the world, including
inadequate funding and limited resources. Photograph scanning and
data entry are knowledge intensive and time consuming activities,
which compete with our fundraising and promotion needs to help us
continue running Project SAVE.
How can I help?
If you appreciate our efforts, consider
donating to Project SAVE Archives through our secure online donation
system.
